The Fourth of July comes at the right time of the year. Imagine having the holiday in January! It just wouldn't be the same. The hottest part of the year is best. The citizens of the United States can get together with friends, family, and the neighborhood,  cooking out, swimming, partying at the park, and waiting for the evening's finale--fireworks.

My husband and I love the programs on PBS, such as A Capital Fourth. Music is a big part of our celebration. Also, we'll go see the movie The Heat, Sandra Bullock's new comedy. I love Sandra Bullock, and after seeing the new Star Trek movie last week when our grandsons were here, I'm reading for something a little milder...and definitely funny.

So, what will you do on the Fourth of July, 2013? Here are the plans of three of our authors:

From Author Linda Swift: My husband and I have been involved in July 4th activities for the past three days, including a musical stage show celebrating the holiday. And for the first time in several years we have nothing planned for the 4th. So we will stay off the highways, beaches, and out of the parks and just relax at home and watch the fireworks from our porch. And we will be thankful that we live in a free country and remember to be grateful to all the men and women, both military and civilian, who bear the scars or made the ultimate sacrifice to make it possible.
Author of a Civil War saga--THIS TIME FOREVER.

From Author Les Williams: Doing my morning workout-watching Independence Day in the afternoon-Grilling bacon wrap steaks and watching a capitol 4th on PBS. Nothing exciting.
Author of : UNWANTED REPUTATION

From Author Karen Michelle Nutt: For the 4th: No picnics or long hours at the beach.
We're going to the movies with friends and the family to see the Lone Ranger!
Can't wait!

  1. Happy Fourth to everyone who celebrates! Am off to a cookout later, just like millions of others. I may be really daring and eat some of it, LOL!

    1. Hi, Miriam! We haven't been to a cookout in many years. When our kids grew up, we hardly did more than put the flag out on the pole close to the road. At least we fly Old Glory.

    1. Elaine--you are? How wonderful--on the 4th of July. A perfect day to get married, if you ask me. Enjoy your special day.

  3. I'll be indulging in a cookout with the family this afternoon and, after sundown, I'll watch the fireworks my neighbor fires off every year from my deck or maybe from my study depending on the weather. My neighbor is Hispanic and a new citizen of the United States, so it impresses me how much he and his family love America and celebrate the Fourth of July with such enthusiasm.
Congratulations on your wedding anniversary, Elaine. I think it would be great to be born on July 4th--fireworks would seem like they are just to celebrate YOU.
Karen, let us know if you like The Lone Ranger.

    1. Sarah--I think that's wonderful for new Americans to be so proud of our country. If only they all did. I hope your cookout goes well...happy 4th.

  5. Hi, Ladies,

Our co-op has a pool club and sponsors a July 4th barbecue. That's where we'll be headed. As to fireworks, I'll watch them
tonight on TV. It's totally humid and hitting 92 here today in NJ. The Lone Ranger has gotten some poor reviews. Let us know what you think of it.

    1. Jacqueline--I've not read good reviews for The Lone Ranger, either. I saw the previews--it's wild, I can tell you that.
Nothing better than to have someone else sponsor a barbecue. Have enough fun for me, too!

  6. Jacqueline,

Have fun at the barbecue! It sounds like it will be hot, though.
I don't listen to the reviews. Sometimes I've loved what they've hated. lol But I'll let you know. :)

  7. No BBQ or fireworks here tonight. Cancelled because of rain and I'm expecting Mother Nature will provide her own display to celebrate. Happy 4th to all and let's enjoy despite circumstances. Love the sharing blog.

  8. Ginger--thanks for loving the blog.
I love a good, loud exciting thunderstorm. We sit on our big screened-in porch and watch and listen--unless the rain begins to blow sideways and drenches us.
We're in for the day. I know the river will be jammed with toobers and the restaurants jammed with tourists..and townspeople. That's good--everyone will have fun because it's nice and hot today.

  9. My town couldn't afford fireworks this year, and they had a music party on the bluff on Saturday. My celebration will consist of a BLT for lunch and grilling a steak for dinner. Maybe a netflix movie to round off the day. Nothing says low-key like Maggie Toussaint...

    1. Maggie--we could have shared the 4th. We're about as low-key as you can get. We stay out of town on the 4th, what with the river going through town and all those toobers. The Outlet Malls also will be jammed. On holiday such as this, the mall will easily have visitors that can triple our town's population. Thank goodness it's out on the Interstate.
We'll also have a sandwich and oven fried potatoes, and go see Sandra Bullock's newest comedy--but we'll do that tomorrow--not today. Theaters will be filled. Tonight--a Capitol Fourth.
Thanks for coming by our publisher's blog. (I'm substituting today.)

  10. I've just read all the posts so far and I'm very glad people are stopping by and adding these many interesting comments. So far I've broken my intent to relax by dead-headig a long row of crysanthemums that were aleady overdue. But it felt good to check another "to-do" chore off my long list.

    1. Hi, Linda--isn't this nice to have visitors? I love it--the more the merrier. Your celebration sounds about like others--very low key. Happy 4th.

  11. Am I the only one of Rebecca's authors from this side of the big pond? July 4th is just an ordinary Thursday here - but a very happy Independence Day to all my American friends!

  12. Paula--I don't know..but I think you are! How could we have forgotten? It feels like an ordinary Thursday to me, too, since I'm doing absolutely nothing different. We'll go out tomorrow to a movie when the crowds have thinned out. I don't know all the authors with Rebecca, so someone else may be from your part of the world, too.
We'll watch fireworks on tv. Good enough for me.

  13. Celia--we're in West Virginia for the big Pierson family reunion! But I DO have a decent internet connection and a few minutes to get online right now, so here I am. We do this every 4th of July...get in the car and drive to WV. We meet with all the family at the Golden Corral for dinner the night after we get here, and then that next Saturday is the picnic. The picnic is usually the weekend BEFORE the 4th but this year, because of the way the 4th fell on Thursday, my bro-in-law planned it for the weekend after. So Saturday we'll go to that. Today though, we've just been relaxing, sightseeing, and went to the Shoney's breakfast buffet this morning. Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday and stays safe. Thanks to all our military men and women and their families for all their sacrifices!

    1. Cheryl--I now remember that you were going to W. VA. I do envy you a bit, having that family gathering. We do not have any kid anymore, on either side of the family. Very sad, but that's the way it is. Have a good time, and yes...thanks to our military men and women.

  14. So far nothing exciting for me. I was packing for my tomorrow trip. In the evening we'll gather with friends on the beach for a BBQ and will watch the fireworks. That's the highlight of every 4th of July. Happy 4th of July.

    1. Mona--sounds like a wonderful 4th to me. It's too crowded to go to fireworks here, and too hot to do much else. Movie tomorrow for us, where it's cool!

  15. This has been a mixed bag of emotions for me this 4th of July. On the one hand, we have our foster kids living with us now to celebrate the first holiday together, a 4 and 6 year old from my wife's side of the family. On the other hand, my wife's brother died yesterday after a long, valiant battle with cancer. I'm pretty much keeping the kids out of her way today while she deals. Fortunately, a trip to the park is a huge event for them. Happy 4th of July to everyone!

    1. Gerald--Good for you on taking care of those precious children. They're so much easier at those ages, but I know it's difficult, too. And to have a death in the family also throws everything off kilter. I admire you, and wish the best for you and your family. Enjoy that trip to the park...it's so easy to entertain little ones.

  16. We went to the parade this morning, saw the Jesse White Tumblers afterward, and had lunch at the same restaurant we always eat at after the parade.

This evening we're going back to the Frontier Days Festival to watch a group called Here Come the Mummies. We are very curious about them!
