ODD VINTAGE EASTER CARDS PART 1--by CHERYL PIERSON

Because I am in love with vintage art and always have been, I had started to look through some vintage Easter greeting cards to blog about—thinking there would be some really cute images to share. There were. But as I went through the selections, I was struck by some of the more ridiculous creations instead of being caught up by the “sweetness” of some of them.

Here, let me show you what I’m talking about. Now, maybe it's just me, but I don't think so. Some of these are just kind of creepy.

Bunnies dancing a jig decked out in colored eggs. Okay, how did they get into those eggs in the first place?

BE HONEST! Did any of you see this in your mind's eye instead?

And...who's bright idea was this? Man, that egg looks heavy. And what is he going to do with it when he gets where he's going with it?

UMMM...call me crazy, but is this the fairy Pied Piper of Hamlin leading the chicks to their doom or what?

Okay, my mother instincts are yelling, screaming, "GET OFF THAT EGG!" (I have to confess, this reminds me of something my son would have tried.) Notice the body of water that they're racing toward? This can only end badly. Why can't this kid just play with these "normal" children below?

A balancing act if I ever saw one. Crazy rabbit, trying to ride a goat with his hands full. I want to look away, but I just can't!

DON'T GET ON THE CHICKEN DIRIGIBLE! What are you guys thinking?

No need for words on this one. Wonder what he plans to kill on this fine Easter day?

I never really noticed how oddly the artists' minds worked in that time for these images. I am almost afraid to go look at the Christmas ones. Or the Valentine ones. These were strange enough, but...do I see a story in there? Maybe one of the dancing bunnies had a terrible childhood that made him want to join Bunny Vaudeville!

Hope you all have a wonderful Easter! Let's see... what did I do with my normal lamb picture...

  1. Cheryl--these are so funny. Very creative. I can believe only you, with your quirky sense of humor could come up with these. Yes, they are weird and unique. I, too, wonder what were they thinking?
The bunny with the rifle over his shoulder made no sense, unless he was going to kill anyone who stole the Easter Eggs. Well, that's sure a nice sentiment.
You made great effective comments on everyone. And yes, why a dirigible?
Thanks for the light-hearted post..and laugh.

    1. Celia, aren't these weird? I posted this last Easter at P&P for our odd week at this time of year, and just had to do Part 2 this year. It'll be up over there on the 31st, Tuesday. Glad my comments brought you a good laugh. Yes, it just boggles the mind as to what those artists were thinking as they created these pictures! LOL

  2. Cheryl, this blog post is a hoot. I'm sure the bunny with the gun is after Elmer Fudd. That first card does raise that eternal question, which came first, the bunny or the egg?

    1. JD, doing "research" on this was so much fun--like not being able to look away from a train wreck. LOL And there are so many of these, it's amazing. Really makes you wonder about these artists, but I tell you, I was laughing myself silly all the way through as I was putting this together.

  3. I love these colorful and rather fanciful old Easter cards. Some of them are rather weird in their concepts, but, hey, I like weird. The witch from the Wizard of Oz did come to mind with the chick riding a bike with giant "Toto" eggs in the back basket. Do you think maybe they put each image into a bag, shook it, and then tossed a couple out and put them together? The rabbit with the shotgun standing over the colored Easter eggs is sort of disturbing. Great post, Cheryl. I don't care that they're kind of wacked, I like these old cards.

    1. Sarah, I love them, too. So much I even wrote a "part 2" to this blog that will appear on P&P tomorrow. LOL Oh, these were fun. I really want to have some time to look at the vintage Christmas cards and Valentines, too. Yes, the rabbit with the shotgun was really weird, wasn't it?

      Thanks for stopping by!
