Superstitious saying we still say today.
Today we say, “to wear your heart on your sleeve,” meaning
it is easy for people to read you.
In the Middle Ages, men and women drew names from a bowl to see who
their Valentine would be. They would wear the name they chose on their sleeves
for a week.
Rituals
In the 1700’s, on the Eve of Valentine’s Day, ladies would pin five bay leaves sprinkled with rose water to their pillows. One leaf was pinned in the centre of the pillow and one at each corner. Rosemary was pinned inside the pillow. Before going to bed, the woman would eat an egg, removing the yolk and eating the rest with salt. They would a say a prayer with a hopes of seeing her true love in her dreams.
Another way to find one’s future husband or wife was to take a piece of paper with names on them and roll them in clay. They would drop the balls into water. The first paper to surface would be the future wife or husband.

Sirena Seafair of Grimm Nitch is half human and half Merrow, one of the merfolk. At fourteen, she saved a teenage boy who'd drowned, but magic always comes with a price. She forfeited the red cap – the very essence of the Merrow and her ability to shift into a mermaid – the moment she breathed life into the teen.
Ten years later, Sirena has made a living for herself in the human world, but she has never felt like she's truly belonged until Jack O'Casey. Jack's made Grimm Nitch his home and has opened a restaurant overlooking the cove. This Valentine's Day, he's bound and determined to make Sirena his sweetheart, but she's just as unwavering to keep him at bay. They're from different worlds, but Sirena is about to find out Jack may have a little magic of his own.

Happy Valentines Day! For an old lady like me, romance is the little things he does without thinking - like holding your hand while you walk together. It's even better when he holds it tight in a crowd to keep from losing you.
ReplyDeleteLove holding hands. Very romantic. Just a small gesture that means so much.
DeleteWonderful blog, Karen. Here are a couple of superstitions from historical times: Hold a mirror over a well or cistern filled with water and see the image of your husband-to-be. Leave a handkerchief on the grass at night and in the morning, dew drops will spell the initial of your future husband. One of my favorite love stories it that of my parents who were married on Valentine's Day. My dad proposed to my mother by asking her to be his valentine for life. And she was.
ReplyDeleteInteresting superstitions. Love the real life happily ever after better. :) Thanks for sharing.
DeleteAfter decades of a successful..if not always smooth...marriage, I can say he has never forgotten Valentine's Day, even though it might be just going for a pizza, or hamburger, or Mexican food and a margarita. In recent years, he's brought me flowers. But he showed me his romantic side the first year we were married back in the late 50s. We married at Christmas on the 21st. so for that first year, on the 21st of each month, he'd pick me up from work (only one car) and drive straight to the flower shop. I was to sit in the car...that great Baby Blue '58 Chevy we...well, we used it during our courtship, too. He bought one red rose each time for 12 months. Then he claimed he got a dozen red roses for our anniversary. (You become inventive when you are as poor as a church mouse and must watch every penny.) Nice post, Karen. I enjoyed it so much.
ReplyDeleteCelia,
DeleteThanks so much for sharing that sweet story of yours. He may have been inventive, but also so romantic.
most romantic Valentine's day is when my boyfriend bought a 5 foot tall bear and put it in my car without me knowing about it. then he said he needed to go to Wal-green's to get some chapstick. i went out to the car and it was in my driver's seat. lol. i got him the chapstick even though it was just a ruse to get me to the car.
ReplyDeleteNova,
